Recognize the textbook bullish confirmation pattern where price and volume move together.
Rising price + rising volume = healthy trend
This is the single most useful pattern you can learn from volume: when price is climbing AND volume is expanding on those green candles, the trend is healthy. Lots of buyers. Real commitment. The move has fuel. Traders call this confirmation, because the volume is confirming what the price is showing.
Here's why this matters. A price move without volume is like a parade with no crowd — technically it's happening, but nobody's there. A price move WITH volume means real money is showing up. Each new high is being hit because aggressive buyers keep stepping in at higher prices. They want in badly enough to chase. That's the energy you want behind a trade you're considering.
What to look for: a series of green candles, each printing a higher high, and the volume bars beneath them growing taller (or at least staying above the recent average). On stocks and crypto, this is real money. On forex, the tick volume rising tells you broker activity is heating up — usually a good directional clue on major pairs.
What this does NOT mean: it doesn't mean the trend will continue forever. It means right now, at this moment, the buyers have the floor. Trends end. Volume can dry up overnight. But when you spot this pattern on your chart, you know the move you're looking at has substance — it's not a thin, easy-to-reverse drift.
Recap: green candles with growing volume = real demand showing up. The cleanest confirmation pattern volume offers.
Knowledge check
Answer before moving on.
1. Price has climbed 4% over five days. Volume on those five up-days has been clearly higher than the previous week's average. What's the takeaway?
2. On a forex chart, you see rising tick volume during an uptrend. How should you read it?
