Volume basics: what it actually measures

Volume is the simplest number on your chart that most beginners ignore. It tells you how much of something traded during a candle. If a 1-hour candle on Apple stock shows volume of 2 million shares, that means 2 million shares changed hands in that hour. Big number, lots of activity. Small number, slow hour. Price tells you WHERE the market went. Volume tells you HOW MANY people came along for the ride.

Here's where forex gets weird. Stocks trade on centralized exchanges like the NYSE, so every share traded is recorded. Crypto trades on centralized exchanges like Coinbase or Binance, so every coin is recorded. But forex is decentralized. There's no single exchange. Banks, brokers, ECNs, and hedge funds trade currencies with each other directly. No one sees the total. So your forex platform can't show you real volume — it shows tick volume instead.

Wick shows three cards, Stocks with real shares counted, Crypto with real coins counted and Forex with tick volume as a stand-in, teaching why forex volume is a proxy.StocksRealsharescountedCryptoReal coinscountedForexTickvolume, astand-in
Wick saysStocks and crypto show real volume, while forex shows tick volume, a stand-in.

Think of tick volume like counting how many people walked into a store, not how many bought something. If 500 people walked in during one hour, the store was busy. Probably some of them bought stuff. The count is correlated with actual sales, but it's not the same number. Studies that compare tick volume on EUR/USD to reported futures volume on the same pair show correlation around 0.85 — high enough to be useful, not perfect.

Wick points at a chalkboard saying tick volume equals price changes counted, like people in a store, not the same as buyers, showing it tracks activity, not exact size.Tick volume= price changes countedLike people in a storeNot the same as buyers
Wick saysTick volume counts price changes, like counting people who walk into a store.

What this means for you: when you read volume on stocks or crypto, treat the number as real. When you read it on forex, treat it as a directional signal — rising or falling matters, but the exact value is fuzzy. You'll learn to use it differently in each market, and we'll cover crypto specifically later in this chapter.

Recap: volume measures participation. Real volume on stocks and crypto. Tick volume (a proxy) on forex. Use it as a conviction reading on top of price.
