Distinguish which currency pairs move during the Asian, European, and US sessions.
The right pair for the hour you have
Forex is global but not uniform. Each currency has a home market, and that home market has a clock. When the home market is open, the participants who actually need to move that currency are awake and trading. Choosing a pair that fits your trading hour is not a strategy edge by itself, but it removes a lot of dead candles from your screen.
The Asian session, roughly 7pm to 3am New York time, is where the yen pairs come alive. USD/JPY, AUD/JPY, EUR/JPY, and the antipodean pairs like AUD/USD and NZD/USD see most of their movement here. These pairs match the Tokyo, Sydney, and Singapore desks that are active during those hours.
The London session, 3am to 12pm New York time, lights up the European crosses. EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP, EUR/CHF, and the pound crosses like GBP/JPY all see their cleanest moves here. The New York session, 8am to 5pm New York time, extends the dollar pairs and adds the US-centric crosses. Gold and the major indices also see heavy participation during these hours.
Recap: match your pair to your session. Yen pairs in Asia. Euro and pound crosses in London. Dollar pairs in New York. Liquidity rewards the matchup.
