Forex basics
What is a lot in forex?
A lot is the size of your trade. A standard lot is 100,000 units of a currency, a mini lot is 10,000 and a micro lot is 1,000.
Think of lots like box sizes at a store. Same product, different amounts.
The bigger the lot, the more each pip is worth. On EUR/USD, one pip is worth about $10 on a standard lot, $1 on a mini lot and $0.10 on a micro lot.
Beginners usually start with micro lots so that each pip is worth only a few cents.
Same move, different sizes
- 1EUR/USD moves 20 pips.
- 2Standard lot: 20 x $10 = $200.
- 3Mini lot: 20 x $1 = $20.
- 4Micro lot: 20 x $0.10 = $2.
