Your brain wants the opposite of what you need

You're 4 trades into a streak. All red. The account is down maybe 3% from where it started. Your brain has a confident plan: trade bigger, trade more often, find the right setup, win it back. That plan is wrong on every dimension and it feels obviously correct. This is the lesson where we install a different plan you can actually trust when your judgment isn't.

Wick climbs three steps labeled shrink size, A+ setups only and rest after 3, showing the losing streak playbook done in order every time.1Shrink size2A+ setupsonly3Rest after 3
Wick saysIn a losing streak: shrink size, trade only A+ setups, and rest after 3 losses.

The professional move during a losing streak is a 3-step playbook. Step one: shrink size. If you normally risk $5 per trade on your $500 account, drop to $2.50. Half. The dollar swings get smaller. The emotional pressure drops. You can think clearly again. This isn't 'trading scared' — it's reducing the cost of additional information while you diagnose what's happening.

Step two: return to A+ setups only. During a losing streak, most traders accidentally lower their bar — they start taking B-grade setups because they 'need' a win. Do the opposite. Set the bar HIGHER. If your normal week includes 8 trades — 4 A+ setups and 4 B-grade ones — drop the 4 B-grades. You should take maybe 1-2 trades a day, only the cleanest ones. Less surface area, less variance, faster recovery when the edge returns.

Wick holds a small scoop labeled $2.50 risk beside a jar labeled $500 account, with a note saying half of the usual $5, showing size shrinks in a streak.Half of the usual $5$500account$2.50 risk
Wick saysCut your usual $5 risk to $2.50 so the swings shrink and your head clears.

Step three: rest. After 3 consecutive losses, you're done for the session. Not 'maybe done,' not 'one more if I see something good' — done. Close the platform. Walk away. Later that day or the next morning, open the journal and review those 3 trades. Were they all the same setup? Same time of day? Same emotional pattern? The losing streak is information; rest gives you the bandwidth to read it.

Wick stands by a traffic light lit red for 3 losses: done, with yellow for skipping B setups and green for A+ only, showing a hard stop rule.3 losses: doneB setups: skipA+ only
Wick saysThree losses in a row ends the session. Review the journal later.

Recap: shrink size, return to A+ only, rest after 3 consecutive losses. Your brain will lobby for the opposite — that's exactly when the rule has to be a rule, not a suggestion. The pros have a script for losing weeks. So should you.

Knowledge check

Answer before moving on.

0 / 3 answered

1. You're down 3 trades in a row on your $500 account. What's the right move on position size?

2. During a losing streak, what should happen to your SETUP standards?

3. How many consecutive losses should trigger an automatic stop for the session?
