Decode the standard US option symbol format so you can identify any contract at a glance.
Five pieces of info in one symbol
Option ticker symbols look intimidating the first time you see one. But they're just five pieces of information stuck together in a fixed format. Once you crack the code, you can read any contract symbol on any platform at a glance.
Here's the format. AAPL250619C00200000. Break that down. AAPL = the underlying stock (Apple). 250619 = the expiration date in YYMMDD format (June 19, 2025). C = type (C for call, P for put). 00200000 = strike price, multiplied by 1000 and zero-padded to 8 digits. So 00200000 means $200.000. A $200.50 strike would be 00200500. A $1,500 strike would be 01500000. That's it. Five pieces glued together.
Practice. Decode TSLA260116P00250000. TSLA = Tesla. 260116 = January 16, 2026. P = put. 00250000 = $250.00 strike. So this is a Tesla $250 put expiring January 16, 2026. The format is the same for any US-listed equity option — single stocks, ETFs, indexes. Once it clicks, you don't need to think about it anymore.
Why care about the symbol format. Three real reasons. One: when reading earnings reports or trade ideas, you'll see these symbols and want to verify the contract before clicking. Two: when filling out an order ticket, knowing the symbol lets you double-check the platform isn't loading the wrong expiry or strike. Three: when reading data feeds, screeners, or sweep alerts, the symbol is the universal ID — knowing it makes everything readable. It's the license plate of every option.
Recap: option ticker = SYMBOL + YYMMDD + C/P + STRIKE (8-digit, x1000). Example AAPL250619C00200000 = AAPL, June 19 2025, Call, $200. Practice on a few and it becomes second nature.
