Where ES sits at 9:25 tells you where SPY opens at 9:30

Before the US stock market opens, index futures have been trading for hours. Asia opened at 8pm Eastern. Europe joined at 3am. By 9:25am, ES and NQ have absorbed every piece of overnight news — earnings, central bank speeches, geopolitical events. Where they sit at 9:25 is the market's best guess of where SPY and QQQ should open at 9:30. Smart traders check the overnight futures move every single morning.

Wick climbs three steps of a morning routine: check ES against yesterday's close, find the biggest overnight news, and see if the overnight chart was clean or choppy.1Check ES vsclose2Find the bignews3Clean orchoppy?
Wick saysFive minutes of prep before 9:30 keeps the open from surprising you.

The simple read: ES is up 30 points from yesterday's cash close at 8:55am? Expect SPY to open green by roughly the same percentage. ES is down 50 points after a major event? Expect SPY to gap down at the open. The futures don't predict the day — they describe what's already been priced in overnight. SPY's job at 9:30 is to catch up to where ES already is.

There's a concept called 'fair value' that adjusts the futures price for things like cost of carry and pending dividends. Most financial data providers publish the ES-to-fair-value spread before the open. If ES is trading well above fair value at 9:25, expect a positive open. Well below fair value, expect a negative open. You don't need to compute it yourself — you just need to know the rough direction and magnitude.

Wick saysES well above fair value at 9:25 often points to a higher open, a clue, not a promise.

A useful morning routine, in three steps. One, check where ES closed yesterday and where it sits now. Two, identify the biggest overnight catalyst — was there an earnings beat, a Fed speech, a geopolitical event. Three, scan the overnight chart for clean trends versus choppy back-and-forth. A clean overnight uptrend on ES suggests the open will continue that direction. A choppy overnight suggests the open may fade. Five minutes of prep before 9:30 saves you from emotional reactions at the bell.

Recap: ES and NQ price overnight news before the cash market opens. SPY and QQQ catch up at 9:30. Check the overnight futures move every morning — five minutes of prep before the bell saves you from the chaos at the open.
