Explain how BTC moves drive altcoin moves — with amplification, lead-lag, and dominance cycles — so the trader watches BTC even when trading alts.
BTC is the weather system
If there is one habit that will protect you in crypto, it is watching BTC even when you are trading anything else. BTC is the weather system of the entire space. Almost every other token moves with it, just amplified. When BTC drops 3% on a Sunday afternoon, mid-cap alts often drop 7 to 10%. When BTC rips 5% on a CPI print, those same alts can rip 15% or more. The chart you are trading on a low-cap token is dancing to BTC's music whether the token's narrative tells you so or not.
The relationship is not always one-to-one in time. Sometimes BTC leads — it makes a move first and the alts follow within hours or even a day. Sometimes during strong risk-on phases the higher-beta alts run ahead and BTC catches up. The lead-lag dance matters because if you only watch the alt, you can miss the bigger setup forming on BTC that decides whether your alt trade lives or dies. Pull up the BTC chart on your alt timeframe and look at them side by side. You will start seeing the link in your sleep.
A second tool worth knowing is BTC dominance, often labeled BTC.D. It tracks BTC's share of the total crypto market cap. When dominance is rising, capital is concentrating in BTC and most alts are bleeding relative to it. When dominance is falling, capital is rotating outward into alts. Traders use BTC.D as a regime indicator. Rising dominance is a tougher environment for alt longs. Falling dominance is the climate where alt seasons happen. You do not need to predict it — you just need to read what regime you are in.
The practical workflow is simple. Before you take a trade on any altcoin, look at the BTC chart on the same timeframe and one higher. Ask one question: is BTC supporting the direction I want to trade, or pushing against it? If it is supporting, the alt setup has a tailwind. If it is pushing against, the alt has to fight that current with its own story. The trades that work most often have BTC's wind at their back.
Recap. BTC is the high tide of crypto. Alts move with it, amplified. Lead-lag dynamics shift between phases. BTC dominance is a regime indicator. Always check BTC before taking any altcoin trade.
Knowledge check
Answer before moving on.
1. If BTC drops 3% on a Sunday afternoon, what should you expect to see on a typical mid-cap altcoin chart?
