Explain what BTC dominance is, how to read the chart, and what it implies for altcoin behavior.
Bitcoin's slice of the pie
BTC dominance, usually written as BTC.D on charts, is the percentage of the entire crypto market value that belongs to Bitcoin. If the total crypto market is worth, say, $3 trillion and Bitcoin alone accounts for $1.5 trillion, then BTC dominance is 50 percent. Traders watch the BTC.D chart almost as often as they watch BTC itself, because it tells you something the BTC price alone cannot — where capital is flowing inside the crypto ecosystem.
Here is the key idea. BTC.D rising means Bitcoin's slice of the pie is growing. Capital is flowing toward BTC and away from alts, even if the alts are still up in dollar terms. BTC.D falling means Bitcoin's slice is shrinking. Capital is rotating out of BTC and into the rest of the market. That second condition is what gets called alt season. But the direction of BTC.D alone is not enough. You also need to know what the total market cap is doing.
There are four scenarios worth keeping in your head. One — BTC.D up, total cap up. Bitcoin is leading the market higher. Alts may still gain dollars but lose share. This is common in early cycle moves. Two — BTC.D up, total cap down. A defensive market. Capital is hiding in BTC, alts are bleeding. Three — BTC.D down, total cap up. The setup most alt traders pray for. Money is rotating from BTC into the broader market. Four — BTC.D down, total cap down. Risk is leaving crypto entirely, with alts dropping faster than BTC. Each scenario implies a very different game plan.
A practical habit. Pull up BTC.D on a daily chart whenever you sit down. Notice whether it is trending up, trending down, or stuck in a range. Then pull up the total crypto market cap chart (TOTAL is the usual ticker) and do the same. The combination tells you, in 30 seconds, what kind of market you are working in. That context shapes everything downstream — which alts you focus on, how aggressively you size, and whether you should even be trading alts at all this week.
