When levels stack

You have spent five lessons collecting different types of S/R — swing points, role-reversal levels, round numbers, prior-period highs and lows. Each one is useful on its own. But the levels that really matter are the ones where two, three, or four of these types happen to land at the same price. That stack is what traders call confluence. It is the difference between a level that might react and a level that almost certainly will.

Why does stacking work. Each S/R type pulls in a different audience. Swing points attract structural traders. Round numbers attract retail and stop-cluster algos. Prior-day highs attract institutional execution flow. A higher-timeframe level attracts long-horizon participants. When all of these reference the same price, every cohort shows up at once. The level is not just visible — it is loud. Reactions get bigger, faster, and more predictable.

A clipboard checks swing point, round number 1.0850 and yesterday's high 1.0852, teaching how to score a level by the types that stack there.Score this levelSwing pointRound number 1.0850Yesterday high 1.0852
Wick saysEach different type that agrees adds weight. Three types make a primary zone.

How to score it in practice. When you mark a level, ask what else it is. Is it also a round number? Is it within a few pips of yesterday's high? Does the daily chart also have a swing point here? Each yes adds weight. A level with one yes is worth watching. A level with three is a primary zone — the kind you build a session plan around. A level with zero independent agreements is just a line on your chart.

A balance scale sinks on the side of three different level types against thirty touches of one type, teaching that confluence is about variety.3 typesSwing+round+day30touchesAll one type?
Wick saysThree different types at one price beat thirty touches of the same type.

A practical note on noise. Confluence does not have to be exact to the pip. If yesterday's high is 1.0852 and the round number is 1.0850, that is a confluence zone of about two pips wide. Treat the band, not the line. We will return to this idea — zones, not lines — in a few lessons. For now, accept that close enough to overlap is close enough to count.

Wick points at a chalkboard joining a day high at 1.0852 and a round number at 1.0850 into one two pip zone, teaching that overlap counts as confluence.Close enough countsDay high 1.0852Round 1.0850= one 2-pip zone
Wick saysYesterday's high at 1.0852 and 1.0850 overlap, so treat them as one small zone.

Recap: confluence is when independent S/R types align at one price. More types means more participant cohorts watching. Score every level by how many types agree. Stacks beat single-sources every time.

0 / 3 answered

1. Which of these is the strongest confluence zone?

2. Why does confluence increase reaction probability?

3. Yesterday's high is at 1.0852 and the nearest round number is 1.0850. How should you treat them?
