When there's no staircase, there's a box

Markets don't always trend. In fact, most of the time, they don't. Studies of price behavior across forex, stocks, and crypto generally find that markets spend 60-70% of their time in some kind of range, not in a clean directional move. If you only know how to trade trends, you're trying to make money during a small fraction of the available hours.

Wick points at a practice chart bouncing between a ceiling near 1.0850 and a floor near 1.0790, showing a sideways box instead of a trend.EUR/USD practicePractice chartCeiling 1.0850Floor 1.0790
Wick saysHighs near 1.0850 and lows near 1.0790 with no staircase means a range.

A range is what you have when neither the uptrend rule (higher highs AND higher lows) nor the downtrend rule (lower lows AND lower highs) is being met. Highs land at roughly the same level over and over. Lows do the same. Price bounces between an invisible ceiling and floor, going nowhere on net. The shape is a horizontal box, not a staircase.

Why ranges matter for your money: trend strategies and range strategies are opposites. In a trend, you buy pullbacks (or sell bounces) because the next push usually continues the trend. In a range, you do the opposite — you fade the move toward the edges, because most of the time, price comes back. Apply the wrong logic to the wrong market state, and you lose. The $500 account can't survive many of those mistakes.

How to spot a range: pick the last 4 to 6 swing points on your chart. If you draw a horizontal line through the highs and another through the lows, do most of the highs and most of the lows sit near those lines? That's a range. The boundaries don't have to be perfect — markets are messy — but the lack of staircase progression is the giveaway.

Two cards compare a trend, where pullbacks often lead to the next push, with a range, where moves to the edges often come back.TrendPullbacks oftenlead to the nextpushRangeMoves to theedges oftencome back
Wick saysTrend logic and range logic are opposites, so name the market state first.

Two common range types you'll see. Tight ranges, where the box is narrow — say 30 pips on EUR/USD — usually mean the market is waiting for news or a session change. Wide ranges, where the box is large, often happen after a strong trending move and represent the market 'digesting' the recent direction. Both behave the same way structurally, but the size of the box affects where you'd set targets and stops inside it.

One more skill: knowing when a range is ENDING. A range ends when price closes clearly outside the box and stays out. Until that happens, treat moves that poke at the boundaries as suspect — those are exactly the false-breakout setups you'll learn in lesson 10. The discipline is to wait for confirmation, not predict the breakout direction.

A traffic light glows red for not sure, sit out, with yellow for wait at an edge poke and green for a clear state, teaching that doubt means no trade. Not sure: sit outEdge poke: waitClear state
Wick saysIf you can't tell a range from a trend, doing nothing is a smart choice.

Recap: no HH-HL, no LL-LH = range. Highs near a ceiling, lows near a floor. Trade logic flips inside a range. When in doubt, sit out.

1. You pull up EUR/USD. The last six swings show highs at 1.0850, 1.0855, 1.0848, 1.0852, and lows at 1.0790, 1.0788, 1.0795, 1.0791. What state is the market in?

2. Why does correctly spotting a range protect your account?
